Capitola Marie Callender's Closes for Good

The pie haven in Capitola is one of 65 closing across the country.

Bad news, pie fans: Capitola's restaurant, located at 3400 Clares St., permanently closed its doors on Sunday.

The Capitola Mall neighbor had been the only branch of the chain in Santa Cruz County, with the next-closest eatery located in Salinas. KSBW reported today that the Salinas location, however, has also closed.

These two area shutdowns are part of a much bigger picture, as 65 Marie Callender's restaurants are locking it up for good, as the company is filing for bankruptcy.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the closings put approximately 38 people out of work per store, equalling 2,500 newly-unemployed pie masters across the country, and 270 in the Bay Area alone.

The good news is that National Pie Day (Jan. 23) is seasons away. Whether that means learning your own recipes, or finding somewhere else to purchase pie (there's always ), you've got time to figure it out.
