Bites Nearby: Wharf House Restaurant

This sea-themed restaurant is fun for out of town guests.

When Capitola's won this week's , we decided it was time to pay a visit to the end of the pier.

If you didn't see the poll yet, .

The Drill: Getting to the Wharf House isn't completely convenient, but it's all part of the experience. There are a few parking spots at the base of the Capitola Wharf. Some are metered, some aren't, although the free spaces are closed from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Your best bet is parking on the Esplanade at one of the new , walking around the corner and making the trek down the wharf.

On your way down the pier, don't miss the plaques that line the railings. Some are old, some new, but all are personalized to recognize people who have loved Capitola.

Once you're inside the restaurant, take a look around. Granted, it's hard to miss, but worth the entertainment to just soak in all the maritime decor that lines the walls.

The Food: Being several football fields off the shore, the emphasis of the menu at the Wharf House is clearly seafood. All the usual suspects are on the menu, including crab, prawns, salmon, clams, snapper and scallops.

In the a.m., the menu is extensive and includes scrambles, omelettes, benedicts, pancakes and potato dishes.

The Recommendation: For breakfast, don't shy away from the crab florentine — English muffins topped with spinach, crab, two poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce. The smoked salmon omelette along with the salmon and crab potatoes will fill you up as well. And if you're thirsty, the fresh squeezed orange juice is worth the walk from your car.
