View Finder: Capitola Wharf

Just another July day on the wharf at Capitola.

Although it was rebuilt during the 1980s after severe storm damage, the Capitola Wharf goes way back. To 1856, to be exact.

Strategically placed at the mouth of Soquel Creek, the wharf was built in order to ship gigantic redwood logs and timber north to San Francisco. A population boom sparked by the Gold Rush, produced a need for such commerce in Northern California, and pretty soon livestock and produce were also being shipped north.

Over the past 150 years, the wharf witnessed the small tent resort blossom into the beloved Capitola by the Sea.

Today, the wharf is a Fishing Pier Project by the city of Capitola and Wildlife Conservation Board with California Department of Fish and Game. Fishing from the wharf is free, with cleaning stations available along its 855-foot span.

, located at the very end of the wharf, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to enjoy a cold beer and seafood dishes and live music almost every weekend.
