Grab & Go Kids Planner: Earth Day, College Tour and a History Play

If you have a high school senior who's been admitted to UC-Santa Cruz, this is the week to check it out.

Where/When: , 137 Dakota Ave., Santa Cruz, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: You live in Santa Cruz County, and this is Santa Cruz County's Earth Day celebration. Lots of great events going on to tell us all why we should think green. And there are numerous kid-friendly events, starting with a concert at 11 a.m. at the main stage with Peter Weiss, the singing scientist.

Where/When: New Beet Cafe at , 1210 41st Ave., Thursday, 6-8 p.m.

Why Go: Southern-style Americana is always a good sound. Patrick Cooper, who is performing live, does it well, and you can expose your younger and older children to songs from artists who may be some of your favorites, like John Prine, Neil Young, Otis Redding, Van Morrison and many others.

Where/When: , 360 Kings Village Rd., Scotts Valley, Wednesday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: It's always good to catch up on our own history, and this time around, we can learn about it from the students at one of our neighboring schools, Scotts Valley Middle School. Your children would benefit from this mid-week evening, and so would you. The eighth-grade students will tell you the story of the Second Continental Congress in this staged reading.

Where/When: Mission Santa Cruz, 126 High St., Saturday, 1-2 p.m. 

Why Go: Take a look at what Mission Santa Cruz's role in the world economy 200 years ago. Some interesting things: See leather and tallow, and learn how they were used. You will also see how a branding iron works and get to make your own candle.
