Why Go: Break away from the California wines for a night and sample the wines of the southern hemisphere. You'll have wines from South Africa, Argentina and more to taste. Laura Majano, a 10-year veteran in the wine industry, will guide you.

PATHWAYS TO PINOT: 2011

Where/When: , 3535 N. Main St., Soquel, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Why Go: Now you can get back to those California wines at the Pinot Paradise 2011 event. You will visit select Santa Cruz wineries. Start out at Bargetto, but for more details and to sign up, contact the Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association at 831-685-8463.

Where/When: , 320 Cedar St., Santa Cruz, Thursday, 7 p.m. 

Why Go: These musicians have the Quincy Jones' seal of approval. Cuban piano phenomenon Alfredo Rodriguez has made appearances throughout Europe and Latin America since the age of 15. He draws on the classics to infuse his jazz. You won't be sorry if you come and hear this trio play!

Pricing: $20 in advance; $23 at the door

Where/When: , 2809 Mission St., Santa Cruz, Friday, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wilder Ranch State Park, all day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Why Go: This is a two-day special event with representatives of an international mountain biking association working with community groups to educate them and help volunteers build trails. On Friday, the trail crew will meet with community leaders. On Saturday, there will be an all-day trail-building school at Wilder State Park. You can make a difference.

Where/When: , 307 Church St., Santa Cruz, Saturday, 8 p.m. 

Why Go: It's the county symphony's third concert of the season. The symphony performs a selection of delightful treats, including "Capriccio Espagnol" by Rimsky-Korsakov and Liszt's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2. Grammy-nominated pianist, Adam Neiman, appears as soloist.
