Get Out in Capitola-Soquel

Drumming, hummingbirds, a free museum tour and a reminder about International Women's Day are all part of the Capitola-Soquel mix this weekend!

Where/When: Jim Greiner's Hands-On! Drumming School at 2745 Daubenbiss Ave., Soquel, takes place Saturday from 1-3:30 p.m.

Why Go: To learn about rhythm power and drumming, and to bang out any work-week stress on percussion, as well as to enjoy, of course! Or as the teacher says, “To find your own groove, release stress and energize your mind and body”.

Where/When: The Museum of Art & History, at 705 Front St., Santa Cruz, the first Friday of every month from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: It's a free day at the museum, offering a chance to see all the museum has to offer at no cost to you. Additionally, if you're there at noon, you'll also get a free docent-led tour of the museum's current exhibits.

Where/When: , 118 Coral St., Santa Cruz, Friday, 6-9 p.m.

Why Go: Meet the artist, Kenneth Srivijittakar, see his work and attend the reception at the opening exhibit on the first Friday of the month. Srivijittakar is a Santa Cruz artist and illustrator whose work is inspired by romantic failures, childhood nostalgia, the imaginary and the people in his life.

Where/When: , 306 Mission St., Santa Cruz, Saturday, 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Why Go: If this has been offered six years running, it's got to be good. Linda Holiday and Penny Sablove Senseis will co-teach on the theme, “Caring for Our Bodies in Aikido Training,” at the seminar. Lunch is included.

Where/When: , 1156 High St., Santa Cruz, (Arboretum), Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: To see actual hummingbirds swarming around the campus gardens. Each spring, thousands of hummingbirds are reported to migrate to the area from Mexico. Show up to catch some in-flight demonstrations as hummingbirds dive, feast and nest at the university gardens.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION

Where/When:Water Street Bridge, Santa Cruz, Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Why Go: It’s the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day—is any other reason needed? Yes, we realize we're breaking a bit of precedent here by going into a non-weekend event, but Tuesday’s celebration is a milestone. Around the world, people will join together on bridges to celebrate the anniversary of International Women's Day and to call for an end to violence against women. Some special guests and prominent people are expected to show up, too.
