Get Out and Get Ready for the Capitola Wine Festival

A Capitola wine festival kickoff with a party in town, another kickoff event at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a special wine and dinner event and tomato-growing tips.

Where/When: , 3535 N. Main St., Soquel (on the patio overlooking Soquel Creek), Thursday, 6-9 p.m. 

Why Go: This celebration is the kickoff to the Capitola Wine & Art Festival and is a fundraiser for it. There will be a Hawaiian flavor to the evening for most everything except the wines. You will be able to sample wines from 20 festival wineries. The Te Hau Nui Polynesian Dancers will give a special performance. There will also be music and a silent and live auction.

Or as the event organizers say, learn not merely to think outside the box, but to think outside the vase. Learn what you can do with peppers and melons besides eat them. Where/When: , 400 Beach St., Santa Cruz, Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. 

Why Go: Look to the 5:30 p.m. slot for the adult portion of the entertainment. That's when you get the Family Stone concert featuring Jerry Martini and Cynthia Robinson, original founding members of Sly & The Family Stone. You do remember them, don't you? This is the kick-off event for the Boardwalk's 2011 summer season with a preview of what's to come. The lineup includes the Family Stone, a performance by Cirque Polynesian at 1 p.m. and more. We mentioned this in our kids planner, but even adults deserve a day at the beach boardwalk.

Where/When: Chaminade Resort & Spa, 1 Chaminade Lane, Santa Cruz, Friday, 6-10 p.m. 

Why Go: This is the start of the summer produce season, and Chaminade will kick it off with its Farm-to-Table dinner series. To make the evening even more special, the wines of Poetic Cellars will be paired with the food to be served. Executive chef  Beverlie Terra is at the helm, using using local produce and meats from Farm to Feat and Coastside Chickens.

Where/When: , 2317 Vine Hill Rd., Santa Cruz, Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Why Go: This workshop is all about backyard tomato growing. Learn the latest techniques for fertilizing, pruning and more, as well as the best ways for staking, mulching, watering and more.
