Capitola Spring Garage Sale to Take Over Town on Saturday

The eighth-annual Capitola Spring Garage Sale is taking place this Saturday.

This Saturday will mark the eighth year of the Capitola Spring Garage Sale, in which dozens of residents all over Capitola will sell their items in front of their homes.

The event was originally the brainchild of Assistant City Manager Lisa Murphy, with the driving idea to recycle unwanted items to other people rather than putting them in a landfill.

It has grown every year since its inception with mass public participation.

“It started off with probably 45 or 50 people, and now people call me and email me asking if I’m going to organize it again,” Murphy said. “They expect it now. Now it’s become a big event.”

This year, Murphy said 80-100 participants will have garage sales as part of the bigger event.

“It’s a really fun, really great event,” Murphy said. “I get tons of people signing up. It can get kind of crazy, but it’s a huge success and people love it.”

Considering the goldmines that can pop up at just one garage sale, Murphy said the wealth of jackpot items can be huge at the Capitola citywide sale.

“You will hit a ton of fabulous garage sales,” she said. “I’ve scored myself. One time I bought a surfboard from a kid. There are always really good bikes. One year a lady was selling an Annieglass collection.”
