Get Out in Capitola-Soquel: Royal Wedding Viewing, Books, Art, Social Justice and Hand Drumming

A book signing, music, a social justice conference, an art and plant exhibit and a hand drumming workshop are top items for the Capitola-Soquel calendar this weekend.

Where/When: , 3050 Porter St., Thursday, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Why Go: This special event gives you a chance to get your Soquel History Book signed by the authors.  The book authors are John Caldwell, Lynn McCall Caldwell, Alice Daubenbis, Barbara Harlamoff McCrary, Richard Nutter, Judy Parsons, Paul Parsons, Bill Roberson and Carolyn Swift. Enjoy the evening with the authors of Soquel's history book.

Where/When: Britannia Arms, 8017 Soquel Drive, Aptos, Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Why Go: What fun! A live viewing/listening party to enjoy the Royal Wedding with friends and fans in an authentic British atmosphere at Santa Cruz County's only British pub.  And British-born Santa Cruz radio personality Rosemary Chalmers will do the hosting of her show, Good Morning Monterey Bay on site.

Pricing:  Free wedding cake and prizes.

Where/When: Hands On Drumming Center, 2745 Daubenbiss Ave., Saturday, 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Why Go:  This is a chance to learn about power hand drumming from the expert. Percussionist and educator Jim Greiner focuses on what drumming can do to help you relieve stress. In our stress-prone world, this is definitely something that bears checking out.

Where/When: Cabrillo College Aptos Campus, 6500 Soquel Drive (Saturday) and Cabrillo College Watsonville Campus  318 Union St, Watsonville, for Friday night reception.

Why Go: At Friday night's opening reception you get to mix and mingle with other conference goers, right here in Watsonville. If you head out Saturday to the conference itself on the Aptos campus, you will get some thought-provoking exchanges on social justice issues, including hearing from keynote speaker Sharaud Moore, one of the original Freedom Writers.

Where/When: 421 Gharkey St, Santa Cruz,  Saturday, Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why Go:  This annual event features the works of 12 local artists and it's a good way to see what they all have to offer while staying under one roof. As spring really sets in with its promise of summer to come, this event also gives you a chance to add to your plant collection by seeing what Crescent Hill Nursery has to offer.

Where/When:  115 San Jose Ave, Friday, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Why Go:  The work week is over and it's time to relax.  Going in for some wine and listening to the music of classical guitarist Paul Renslow is a terrific way to start out your weekend. Good music, good wine, and the good company of your friends and/or partner. 

Pricing:  Whatever you spend on the wine you consume.
