Women Surfers Riding High Again at Capitola Beach

Women on Waves Surf Festival returns for fun, glory and charity Saturday morning.

Women will be riding the waves off Capitola Beach on Saturday.

The Women on Waves Surf Festival returns after a three-year hiatus with nearly 100 women, ages 13-59, competing in the spotlight. Proceeds from the festival are divided between three local charities: The Women on Waves Scholarship, the Barry Hanby Cabrillo College Scholarship, WomenCARE for female cancer patients, and Women's Crisis Support.

The surf festival launched in 1996 with support from the West Wind Surf Club and, later, Sally Smith, the founder of the Paradise Surf Shop. The Mermaid Series took over organizing duties and 2009, but the festival wasn't staged for the past three years.
