VIDEO: Original Dog Whisperer Visits Soquel

Paul Owens gave a nearly three-hour presentation on positive dog training at Land of Medicine Buddha in Soquel on Wednesday evening.

The Pine Room at Soquel's Land of Medicine Buddha played host to the Original Dog Whisperer, Paul Owens, on Wednesday evening.

Owens gave a 150-minute presentation to nearly 40 guests, teaching the basics of positive dog training. A longtime yogi, and cousin of Laurie McLaughlin, an employee of the location, Owens was right at home, barefoot along with his guests, up in the Prescott Road hideaway.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the SPCA, and will also go toward making Land of Medicine Buddha more handicap-friendly.

Owens' book, The Dog Whisperer, came out in 1999, years before Cesar Milan, his better-known namesake, hit the National Geographic Channel. Owens' follow-up, The Puppy Whisperer, was published in 2007. Despite their matching monikers, Owens and Milan could not be farther apart on training philosophy. Owens practices positive, nonviolent training, while Milan believes in the power of physical force.

Owens has given talks nationwide on the art he has perfected, and has garnered praise from the likes of Survivor Host Jeff Probst, Price is Right legend Bob Barker and the APDT Chronicle of the Dog, among many others.

Wednesday's attendees got the chance to watch Owens in action with three different dogs, and also engaged in a question and answer session. See highlights of the event in the video above.
