Santa Cruz County DA's Office Cautions About ATM Skimming

Residents should check bank statements regularly, and avoid late night and morning hours at the ATM.

Local residents should be aware of ATM skimming throughout the state, said the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office.

They cited two cases in San Luis Obisbo this summer, in which the defendants replaced Chase Bank ATMs with micro cameras, capturing PIN numbers

One of the defendants stole almost $220,000 from 300 Chase Bank customers in Santa Clara, Marin, Fresno and San Luis Obispo counties.

The Santa Cruz County DA’s office advised residents to:

  • Check for unusual scratches or adhesive residue.
  • Avoid late night and early morning hours.
  • Check banking statements regularly.
  • Contact your bank immediately if you see unauthorized withdrawals.

Consumers can contact the district attorney's consumer affairs office at 831-454-2050 with questions.
