The Leadership Council for Smart Solutions to Homelessness and Watsonville Mayor Karina Cervantez will co-host a free public screening of INOCENTE on Thursday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Watsonville Civic Plaza Community Room (accessed from 260 Rodriguez Street and located on the sixth floor).

INOCENTE is an Academy Award-winning documentary that chronicles the life of an irresistibly likable young Latina girl who has overcome poverty, her undocumented status, and homelessness to win widespread recognition for her whimsical, colorful artwork.

This inspiring film highlights the plight of homeless youth, one of the fastest growing subpopulations among the homeless today.

At a national level, 1 in 50 children are homeless.

Within Santa Cruz County, transition age youth were found to be one of the fastest growing sub-populations for those experiencing homelessness according to the most recent Point in Time Census conducted by Applied Survey Research.

The showing, which is being co-sponsored by the Watsonville Film Festival and the United Way of Santa Cruz County, will be followed by a community conversation about efforts to prevent and end homelessness in the Pajaro Valley and throughout Santa Cruz County -- highlighting how the public can get involved.

Smart Solutions to Homelessness, an initiative of the United Way of Santa Cruz County, is committed to creating a community-wide response to homelessness in which all residents have a role to play.

Through the work of Smart Solutions to Homelessness countywide representatives from the faith community, local businesses, non-profit service providers, and city and county agencies are working together to identify and develop solutions to homelessness that are evidence-based, cost-effective, produce measurable results, benefit the entire community, and take steps to end homelessness.

Their vision is a Santa Cruz County in which every community member has some form of safe shelter and where homelessness is a rare occurrence. Smart Solutions to Homelessness seeks to create broader and more diverse community engagement on homelessness and foster community dialogue on homelessness that promotes dignity and respect for all.
