Get Out! in Mid County

The weekend is approaching, and you're still not sure what you want to do. Not to worry. Patch comes to the rescue with suggestions for five things you might enjoy!

Close to home, there are art openings, plays, lectures and more. Check out what's happening in and around  Capitola-Soquel this weekend, and don't forget to add your own suggestions in the comments section below. 

1. IT'S ABOUT THE WATER: CONCERT FOR 1,000 HUMMINGBIRDS

Where/When: Inner Light Ministries 5630 Soquel Dr., Saturday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: This is a benefit for 1,000 hummingbirds.  There will be a concert and silent auction with Alice Di Micele (river songtress), Medicine River (Native Women Drum Group), Kalae Miles (Hawaiin Singer) and many others. Expect to be uplifted, moved and changed by the astonishing alchemy of these musician-songwriters, medicine women, artists and artisans, drawn to the same stage by the 1,000 hummingbird vision.

Pricing: $20 in advance, $25 at the door

2.  SAY GOOD-BYE TO THE BUTTERFLIES

Where/When: Natural Bridges State Beach. From Highway 1, take Swift Avenue West or follow West Cliff Drive north along the in-town bluffs until it ends at Natural Bridges. Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Why go: To say good-bye to the butterflies, of course. But there's more. The 5M's Band will play, and there will be guest speakers, talks about migratory animals, community group booths and games for children. There will also be skits, hand-on art projects and free habitat cake.

3. ROMANCE IN THE REDWOODS

Where/When: Big Basin Redwoods State Park, 1600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek. Sunday, 11 a.m. 

Why go:  Just in time for Valentine's Day, join the Santa Cruz State Park Department for Romance in the Redwoods. Come out to Big Basin Redwoods State Park for an easy one-hour walk, where you'll learn about courtship, mating and reproduction behaviors of banana slugs, newts and woodpeckers!

Pricing:  Free

4.   MAGDALENA'S MUSE POETRY WRITING GROUP

Where/When: , 1475 41st Ave. Friday, 7-9 p.m. 

Why Go: Magdalena Montagne has more than 10 years experience working with poets in the making, and she can help you bring out the poet within. Participants will write new works in a supportive and creative environment.

Pricing: $10; $5 to Capitola Book Café and $5 to Magdalena.

5.  BEATLES MUSIC FOR THE VALENTINE'S DAY WEEKEND

Where/When: Kuumbwa Jazz Center. 320 Cedar St., Santa Cruz. Friday and Saturday; doors open at 7 p.m.

Why Go: Because it's the Beatles music. Is there anyone who doesn't like the Beatles or doesn't have a memory linked to some Beatle song? This is a weekend of Beatles music performed on mostly acoustic instruments, with selections included from the last seven albums—Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, The “White” Album, Let it Be and Abbey Road, with an accent on beautiful melodies, acoustic guitars, grand piano and rich vocal sounds.

Pricing:  Tickets, $25.
