Get Out in Capitola-Soquel: Author Discussions and the County Fair

The Santa Cruz County Fair is off and running at the Fairgrounds in Watsonville early this week and runs through Sunday.

Where/When: , 2601 E Lake Ave., Watsonville, CA. Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

Why Go: "Dancing With the Steers For 200 Years" in the theme for this year's County Fair. The fair will join fairs from across the country in celebrating the 200th anniversary of county fairs in America. Panels depicting that first fair, the history and highlights of fairs since, and the future of fairs, will be on display in the Harvest Building as an exhibit titled “Made in America - The Story of the Modern Fair.”  Arts and Crafts, Live Music and a handful of other attractions will also take place throughout the week.

Why Go: Author Dan Gottlieb discusses his book The Wisdom of Sam: Observations on Life from an Uncommon Child Thursday night. After dealing with the loss of his legs due to a near-fatal car accident, and then the loss of his wife when she left their marriage, psychotherapist Gottlieb turned to writing to face his suffering. In The Wisdom of Sam, he shares remarkable insights that he has learned from his grandson, Sam, who is on the autism spectrum.

Where/When: Seaside High School, 2200 Noche Buena St., Seaside, CA. Friday, 7 p.m.  

Why Go: The Soquel High football team hits the road this Friday night to sqaure off against Seaside High. Soquel fell 69-42 to Carmel in a wild one last weekend to fall to 1-1 overall. The Knights scored a whopping 62 points of their own in week one against Cupertino High. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Seaside. Soquel opens league play at home on Sept. 30 against Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title contender Scotts Valley High.

Why Go: International best-selling author Tad Williams is the creator of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Otherland, and the four-volume epic fantasy series Shadowmarch, a vast tale of magic, intrigue, terror, sacrifice and war. His wife, Deborah Beale, also a respected author, has teamed up with him on a fabulous fantasy novel for young readers, The Dragons of Ordinary Farm. This dynamic duo—and new Santa Cruz residents—will have a lively discussion about the writer’s life, marriage, and the fascinating worlds that exist in our heads. Professional book reviewer Rick Kleffel will lead the authors in conversation.

Why Go: Pro Wrestling Revolution heads back to Watsonville for the Santa Cruz County Fair. This is the third consecutive year at the fair for PWR . Pro Wrestling Revolution’s first Woman Champion, Lady Apache will be on hand as well as several other PWR competitors. Enjoy a day at the fair and a exciting evening with Pro Wrestling Revolution. The show is free with your paid fair admission!
