Coastal Watershed Council Seeks Adventurous Volunteers for Annual First Flush Event

First Flush is an annual, volunteer monitoring event that samples storm drain runoff during the first significant rainfall of the wet season. During the first rainfall, water washes significant levels of pollution off street surfaces, driveways, and curbs and into storm drains. This concentrated mix of often polluted water flows directly from these storm drains into creeks, rivers and the Monterey Bay.

Volunteers are trained to monitor specific storm drains & collect water samples during the first initial runoff. We monitor day or night!

Samples are sent to a professional lab to assess levels of non-point source pollutants such as nutrients, metals, bacteria, hardness, and total suspended solids.

Classroom Training Date: Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Meeting Place: City of Capitola, Council Chambers, 420 Capitola Avenue
 
Dry Run Training Date: Saturday, September 8, 2012
Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Meeting Place: Teams will meet at pre-assigned storm drain outfalls  

Please plan to attend both trainings

And once we’ve completed the Dry Run – we wait for the rain!
