Capitola Event With Bestselling Author Peggy Orenstein

Peggy Orenstein will discuss the cultural shift of girls toward the 'ultra-feminine' in her book, 'Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture,' at the Capitola Book Cafe, Wednesday.

The New York Times best-selling author, Peggy Orenstein, will be at the Capitola Book Cafe to discuss her book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture, on Wednesday.

In her book, Orenstein discusses the “princess mania” that she says has consumed a fresh generation of young girls.

The idea of her book, which was generated from her own daughter's obsession with the color pink and Disney princesses, received backlash from doubtful parents when The New York Times Magazine published an article on the topic, and it was then that Orenstein realized this was not just a one-time discussion, according to her website.

However, Orenstein found she wasn't alone in her view of a new cultural shift toward the “ultra-feminine” after discovering that many parents shared her concern. Her book further touches on the involved role of marketing in promoting such an image, according to her website.

Orenstein is often considered an expert on the development of girls, because of her 1994 book, Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self Esteem and the Confidence Gap, which quickly became a bestseller.
