American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3 researchers are not exaggerating when they say your participation in this study will save lives in future generations.

The American Cancer Society is involved in one of the biggest data collection studies in human history. We are in the process of enrolling 300,000 Americans in a study that will follow subjects through the course of their life and look for risk factors as a way to prevent cancer. In the greater Bay Area we are in need of 4,000 people to sign-up to help us meet our national goal.

This study known as the Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3) is following on the footsteps of other two other game changing studies that altered the fight against cancer.  Previous long-term Society studies have played a major role in cancer prevention, including demonstrating the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, the impact of being overweight or obese on risk of cancer occurrence and death, and much more.

Advocates, know how important data is to inform policy makers on how to tackle tough problems like cancer. This study is critical to our advocacy efforts because the data we collect will give us the tools we need to convince law makers to make the fight against cancer a priority. Without the data collected in other cancer prevention studies, we never would have passed tobacco taxes or laws that restrict exposure to second hand smoke. These laws have saved literally millions of lives. CPS-3 will dwarf the other two studies in terms of the scope.

We are recruiting enrollees as well as community champions who will pledge to recruit 10 enrollees.  So whether you want to be a CPS-3 champion in your community or simply want to enroll yourself, we need your help.

To be eligible to enroll in our Cancer Prevention Study - 3 (CPS-3), men and women should:

  • be between 30 and 65 years old
  • have no personal history of cancer (this does not include basal or squamous cell skin cancer)
  • be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study which simply involves completing periodic follow-up questionnaires.
