Six men running for the first second and fifth district county seats address women and childrens needs.
Six county supervisorial candidates and board chairperson John Leopold laid out their vision for how to provide the best child healthcare and food assistance options to 30 area residents Tuesday. The discussion largely centered around digitizing and streamlining the application processes for program including MediCruz and Cal Fresh (formerly food stamps). Danny Keith of Second Harvest Food Bank moderated the forum held at the Resource Center For Non-violence in Santa Cruz. He cited that Santa Cruz County ranks 45th of 58 counties in the state for the number of eligible families who apply for Cal Fresh and asked how candidates would improve this level. 20 percent of county residents receive some sort of food assistance, but with the county …

GOP members tell Californians not to give up hope.
Tim Pawlenty, former governor of Minnesota and presidential hopeful, told California Republicans that it is possible to elect a conservative candidate in a state often deemed too liberal and overlooked by most campaigners. Pawlenty spoke to about 250 supporters Saturday night at the California Republican Convention, about half the number that attended Newt Gingrich’s speech earlier in the day. “If I can be a conservative governor in Minnesota, we can do it anywhere,” he said, noting that Minnesota has elected liberal politicians such as Al Franken and Walter Mondale. He told Californians that they live in the most entrepreneurial and innovative state in the country, and they must fight to keep it that way, arguing that only lower taxes …
Keynote speaker of GOP California Convention pounced on President Obama during afternoon address.
Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich blamed the Obama Administration for the recent spike in oil prices and promised supporters at the California Republican Convention today that he would sign an executive order if elected to approve the Keystone XL pipeline project. With dozens of supporters holding “$2.50 a gallon” signs behind him during his speech at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel Saturday, Gingrich admonished what he called the Obama Administration’s systemic failure in energy policy, and accused it of deliberately raising gas prices. “When you fill up your tank, you can think of gas prices as the Obama tax,” he said. The national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.67 as of today, according to AAA. Gingrich …

The city of Santa Cruz stays whole, while adding the coastal portion of Monterey to the county's state senate seat.
After much contention and speculation to the contrary, the city of Santa Cruz will stay whole in the new redistricting maps that determine who will represent voters in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. The final redistricting maps for assembly, state senate, Board of Equalization and congressional boundary lines were approved by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission Monday morning, and certified by the Secretary of State Monday afternoon. Residents within Santa Cruz County will be happy to know that the approved final maps keep the city of Santa Cruz and it's congressional voice whole, after the commission's first-draft maps had divided the city of Santa Cruz down the middle in order to correct its 2 percent retrogression of …

Bill Monning will begin his senate campaign against Sam Blakeslee on Aug. 16.
Assemblymember Bill Monning promoted the Native American philosophy of making decisions based on how people seven generations in the future will be affected at his book signing Thursday night at the Capitola Book Cafe. More than three dozen people came to hear his solutions to issues ranging from preserving the environment, to saving our school system, to breaking the budget gridlocks currently stalling government at the federal and state level. “We are engaged in a battle for the future of our state, for our country...and, forgive me for being dramatic, but the fate of our planet,” Monning said as he promotedat his new book, Vision For A Healthy California. The California Citizens Redistricting Commission releases a draft plan with new state electoral districts on Friday. Here is what you need to know about Santa Cruz County and the new districts.
After two years of work, the 14-member California Redistricting Commission released draft plans for new congressional and state districts for the entire state on Friday. The plans show new boundaries for California's 53 congressional districts, 40 state Senate districts and 80 state Assembly districts, as well as districts for the state Board of Equalization, which handles taxation issues. The boundaries are in the draft stages now, and there will be a public input process. The final districts will be released in August. What This Means for Me It means you could find yourself part of a new congressional or state district. And it means you could find yourself suddenly part of the majority (or minority) politically. It means overall that …
