Thousands of people from many backgrounds are seeking a limited number of jobs at the Target job fair.
Claire Foster did not envision standing in line for a job at Target when she looked ahead to being 55-years-old, she said Thursday. She was one of hundreds who showed up for the three-day event at the Career Development Center in Capitola. Unemployment in Santa Cruz County currently stands at 13.7 percent, and has not dropped below 10 percent since December 2008, according to the U.S Bureau Of Labor Statistics. Foster was the office manager when Creative Labs in Scotts Valley shut its doors in Jan. 2011. She came out Thursday unsure if she qualifies for any positions at Target, but is trying to find anything at this point. "I've been jobless a long time and it's really scary," said Foster. "My unemployment runs out in 10 weeks and I'm not …

The owners of Ristorante Barolo have not been able to fully turn around their business following Food Network's help.
On Wednesday's episode of "Restaurant: Impossible" featuring Ristorante Barolo in Aptos, owner Cristina Locke said she often feels like she takes "one step forward and five steps back." With Food Network's help, the progress is now moving forward, but not quite at the pace that Locke may have hoped. FoodNetwork.com caught up with the folks at Ristorante Barolo and shared this update on its site: In Aptos, Calif., Robert and the "Restaurant: Impossible" team faced the daunting task of turning things around at Ristorante Barolo. Owners Giovanni Guerisoli and Cristina Locke struggled with the changing economy as well as family health problems, and could barely keep their 10-year-old business afloat. We checked in with the couple to see how …
The Aptos restaurant, made over in February, threw a party to celebrate their episode's first showing on Food Network Wednesday.
A crowd of eager guests packed the newly-renovated Ristorante Barolo on Wednesday night to watch the local establishment make a special appearance on Food Network's "Restaurant: Impossible." More than 75 people showed up to support owners Christina Locke and Giovanni Guerisoli's party for the nationally-televised episode on the restaurant. The bar was decorated with balloons and a large projection screen was set up in the main dining room to view the episode. On the back patio they set up paintings of Bob Marley, Albert Einstein, Carlos Santana and the Rat Pack by painter Milo Buck. Guests were even treated to a fire dance show put on by Locke’s daughter Andrea Locke, who works for the Lunar Flame Fire-Art Productions. But it wouldn’t be a…

The Fog Bank and Paradise Beach Grille were evacuated late Wednesday morning.
Update 2:22 p.m.: Paradise Beach Grille has re-opened, while Fog Bank remains closed. The gas, however, is still out at Paradise Beach meaning the menu is limited to simpler items like soup, salad and sandwiches. Original Report: Business is on hold at the Fog Bank and Paradise Beach Grille on Wednesday afternoon as a natural gas leak reported at 11:33 a.m. forced the evacuation of both eateries. Construction across the street from both Esplanade restaurants in front of the Capitola Hotel has slowed traffic of late, but now it has resulted in business stoppage as well. "They're doing some construction and one of the workers hit [the gas line]," Central Fire Spokesman Mike DeMars said. The line, which DeMars said is either a half inch or …
The major addition to the Capitola Mall is hiring over the next few days.
While California is near the top of the nation in unemployment, a national chain is set to make a dent in the local out-of-work population this week. Target is on track to open mid-summer in the Capitola Mall and the retail giant is looking for 300 new employees, many of which will come from its May 17-19 job fair at the Capitola Career Center. The three-day event will run from 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. daily. "Hundreds of prospective candidates will attend the public event to apply and interview for open team member positions available in all areas of the new store," Target Communications said in a prepared statement. "During the event, store leaders will review applications, conduct interviews and discuss Target’s dynamic, team-oriented …
The Art & Wine Festival Kickoff Party will feature tastings from 21 wineries.
The Capitola Art & Wine Festival is still months away, but the celebration begins this week with the "Pirates & Pearls" themed kickoff party at Bargetto Winery. On Thursday, May 17 from 6 - 9 p.m., the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce has planned to serve Caribbean appetizers prepared by E&J Catering to go along with wine samples from 21 of the wineries who will be represented at the festival this summer. For $35, attendees will also pick up a festival glass. Along with wine, food and pirates, The True Olive Connection will be in the house to offer olive oil tastings. (Did you know pirates were really into olive oil?) Also planned for the night is the unveiling of the 2012 festival poster, a silent auction, live auction, art auction, …

The local business has included incentives to donors to stay afloat.
The cornerstone to getting the ball rolling on the Capitola Book Cafe's plan to stay in business is donations from the community. The Book Cafe announced last week that it is launching a nonprofit called Books Belong to hold literary events and lead education efforts in the community. Books Belong will be funded by grants and local donations. For the 501(c)(3) to get off the ground, the business is hoping to raise $285,000 by the end of June. Without that money, the Book Cafe will be forced to close its doors. So the local literary institution has put together a donation system in which locals are rewarded for their contribution to the Book Cafe. The most valuabe recognition of donors that they are offering is a dedicated name plate …
