KPIG's Alternative Newsman Travus T. Hipp Died Friday Morning

The man known for decades on the radio by his Hipp name passed away in his sleep at home in Silver City, Nevada. Among other things, he was famous for getting arrested for growing marijuana while broadcasting live.

Callers began flooding Freedom-based radio station KPIG-FM (107.5) Friday after disk jockeys told listeners that controversial newsman Travis T. Hipp passed away in his sleep overnight. He was the man who gave "All The News You Never Knew You Needed To Know ...Until Now." The 75-year-old, who was born Chandler Laughlin III, seemed like a lifelong hippie and did his news reports by phone from his home in Silver City, Nevada, because he thought California was going to fall into the ocean. Hipp was part of the 1960s revolution, a contemporary of Wavy Gravy, who spent time at radio stations KSAN in San Francisco and KZAP in Sacramento before he signed up with KFAT in Gilroy, which turned into KPIG in Freedom in 1988. "He basically gave the …

Ristorante Barolo Celebrates 'Restaurant: Impossible' Debut

The Aptos restaurant, made over in February, threw a party to celebrate their episode's first showing on Food Network Wednesday.

A crowd of eager guests packed the newly-renovated Ristorante Barolo on Wednesday night to watch the local establishment make a special appearance on Food Network's "Restaurant: Impossible." More than 75 people showed up to support owners Christina Locke and Giovanni Guerisoli's party for the nationally-televised episode on the restaurant. The bar was decorated with balloons and a large projection screen was set up in the main dining room to view the episode. On the back patio they set up paintings of Bob Marley, Albert Einstein, Carlos Santana and the Rat Pack by painter Milo Buck. Guests were even treated to a fire dance show put on by Locke’s daughter Andrea Locke, who works for the Lunar Flame Fire-Art Productions. But it wouldn’t be a…

Would have been nice to have the address. Locals may recognize the place, but the tourist trade is what will make or break it.   more ›

Don't Miss Aptos on Food Network Wednesday

Ristorante Barolo is making its television debut at 10 p.m. on "Restaurant: Impossible."

One final reminder: The episode of "Restaurant: Impossible" that was shot at Ristorante Barolo in Aptos will air Wednesday at 10 p.m. on Food Network. Here is Food Network's description of the episode featuring the local business: When Giovanni and his partner Christina purchased Ristorante Barolo in Aptos, C.A., 10 years ago they hoped the combination restaurant and hotel would be the perfect fit for them and their seven children. After a very successful first five years, a changing economy combined with the high cost of maintaining a historic building plus family health problems have hurt Ristorante Barolo. The couple has turned to chef Robert Irvine to help save their business and their family. In case you miss the episode Wednesday, it…

Cooking with Rose Hips

Antioxidant-rich rose hips are fragrant tools for culinary experimentation.

At this time of year, finding rose hips is as easy as going into your backyard. That cherry-sized fruit left behind after the rose blossom dies is actually a highly-nutritious culinary gem—so don't be too quick to toss it in with your other dead clippings. Rose hips are higher in antioxidants than green tea, and also loaded with vitamin C, so it isn't hard to see why they have been used medicinally for centuries.  In the kitchen, rose hips can easily be turned into teas or infused into simple syrup to pour over a bowl of vanilla ice cream for an elegant dinner party dessert, or to lace a refreshing summertime cocktail with, for a delicate floral note. If you have a surplus of rose hips and you want to get really fancy, consider making rose…

I've been thinking about making a rose hips and lavendar beer for summer, maybe with a little citrus in it also. Anyone else tried brewing with rose hips?   more ›

Soquel Students Talk Making Magic on Stage

The Pirates of Penzance opens Friday. Were is a Q&A from behind the scenes.

Soquel High's Drama teacher, Maggie Kline, is bent over a script as she watches her students rehearse just days before the opening of their latest production, The Pirates of Penzance which begins Friday. The play is full of swashbuckling pirates (Kline plays one herself), and "fluttery," waif-like maidens. The atmosphere in the cafeteria-turned-theater-by-afternoon is boisterous, excited and tense. "Clara, we don't have the grave stones anymore. Can we fix that!?" Kline shouts to the back of the room where the students working the behind-the-scenes production are huddled. "Can we hide behind the pews?" asks Kline. "I'll figure something out," Clara Hartman calls back. Hartman is a senior, and the play's choreographer. A dancer herself …

Projector Breaks Down During Two Showings of 'The Avengers' in Capitola

The audience at the CineLux 41st Avenue Cinema was sent home about 90 minutes into the 2-hour and 23-minute film. Both theaters were showing the film. It's fixed now.

Hundreds of people had their dreams plummet to earth like Thor's hammer after the projector broke down at the packed Capitola CineLux Cinema Friday for the first primetime showing of The Avengers. "It won't be fixed tonight," said a man behind the counter who gave people tickets to see the movie at another time. Customers who had paid $10 a ticket waited in a long line for their refund. "A line to get in and a line to get out," said one man. Some immediately headed to downtown Santa Cruz, where lines snaked around the block at the Regal Cinema 9 and the first three evening shows were sold out. The movie grossed $80 million in its first night, according to CBS radio news. The theater's general manager reported that the theater is back up …

Coldplay Turns the Audience Into the Light Show

It's been a ferocious month for great music all over Santa Cruz and a bit beyond. Visually, Coldplay took the prize.

You've got to love a band like Coldplay that gives back. I'm not talking about music here, because no one can top Bruce Springsteen, who gave three solid hours of big band playing at the San Jose Arena Tuesday night (attended by many Santa Cruz fans.) But visually, Coldplay took the prize with a gimmick I'd never seen at a rock show before. Every person entering what fans will always think of as the Shark Tank (despite whatever corporate sponsor bought the naming rights this year), was given a wristband. There were signs telling them not to throw them away because they were part of the show. Yeah, it was a corporate wristband, plugging Coldplay on one side and Twitter on the other, but it wasn't offensive. Having seen pictures from the …

I really find it crap to read reviews comparing Coldplay to U2; Chris to Bono, etc. I listen to Coldplay because I love their music- it always brings out emotions- not because I want something like U2. Don't get me wrong, I also love U2. But I just find it so unfair for people to always compare when each band or musician has its own distinct style and sound. They're just as unique as every human …   more ›
