Once upon a time, Capitola hosted a well-known downhill skating contest.
Now, thanks to YouTube user roadrider1973, we can view footage of the 1982 Capitola Classic Skateboard Race. Check out the spandex-clad boarders zooming down Monterey Avenue into Capitola Village in the video above.
In 2012, not only is there no skateboarding competition in Capitola, skateboarding is actually illegal in the Village.

Absolutely awesome footage!! I'd like to know about some of the racers: "Where are they today?" Do they still skate? Are their kids skateboarders? even if the City of Capitola still deems it necessary to ban skateboards in the Village area, it would be nice to have events such as the Classic once a year, and /or another competitive skateboard event for little kids (and big kids) on the Esplanade.
Another thing: whoever made those Capitola Classic t shirts should make a new batch as a blast from the past!! I know I would buy several! Great artwork!!
